Fun Facts

  • The first known mention of a form of the word "billiards" appears in Edmund Spenser's Mother Hubberd's Tale in 1591, where he speaks of "all thriftless games that may be found ... with dice, with cards, with billiards."
  • The sport is almost exclusively referred to as "pool", due to a perhaps unfortunate association with the "poolrooms" where gamblers "pooled" their money to bet remotely "off-track") on horse races. Because these venues often provided billiard tables, the term "pool" became synonymous with billiards.
  • The word snooker also has military origins, being a slang term for first-year cadets or inexperienced personnel
  • The origin of all billiard games is an outdoor game similar to croquet, used to be played in France on the 14th century. Due to the game popularity among royalty as well as common people and thanks to the capriciousness of the European weather, the billiard game was born as an indoor game. Billiard was played on a table covered with green felt in order to resemble the lawn on which the ancestor game was played.
  • The first public pool hall in history was built in England during the end of the 18th century.
